International Photography Competitions

Click here to view the details of all the PSA and FIAP international photography competitions that you (yes, YOU) can enter before the end of December 2020. Acceptances and Awards at any of these competitions can count toward your photographic honours from the APS, all the way up to APSEM!! They can simultaneously count to honours from FIAP and the PSA, the two largest photography associations in the world. APS Honours Project

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Participation

  • Financial Cost
There is no cost involved until you decide whether you will submit an application, and that is entirely up to you, but by then you'll have a pretty good idea of what your chances are. The cost should be a one-off of APS fee and application fee, a total of $124. I am told that you don't need to continue your annual APS m'ship to continue to use the post-nominals, but there are some benefits from being an APS member too.

  • Time Cost
This really depends on the current quality of the portfolio you can put together. 12 images for LAPS is not too demanding as the images should already exist. Images that have already done well is a good headstart. Lisa, Peter & Shaw (tbc) will evaluate and let you know what images to focus on and what tweaks would be needed. Participation in the workshops and online will take a few days here and there

  • Benefits
The biggest value I see is what we will learn: getting detailed feedback on your images doesn't happen very much and should be extremely valuable. The workshops should also open our eyes to new post-processing techniques.

The value of letters after one's name is entirely personal, although I think family and friends generally value it more than the recipient. I believe that it is also valuable for the club to have members recognised in this way. It does build internal pride within the club and external kudos for the club.

So, on a cost-benefit analysis, this comes out very high for everyone involved. Lots of benefits, time well spent and modest cost only if you choose to proceed; and you can withdraw at any time.
